ATMOSPHERE

"Architecture is not merely four walls and a roof, but the space and spirit that unfold within." Lao-Tse – 6th century BC.

This residence holds a singular atmosphere, shaped by the presence of its former occupant, the opera bass Miquel Riera Sureda (1859–1939).

Nestled along the street that bears his name, "Carrer del Baix Riera," this historic building—protected by heritage designation—is now poised for a meticulous restoration, one guided by reverence and restraint.

Many elements emerge as worthy of preservation—details to be honored—while others, later additions, call for removal.

Exquisite woodwork, crafted by master carpenters of a bygone era, remains intact, alongside soaring ceilings with impeccably preserved northern pine beams. A grand staircase unfolds with quiet majesty, while the singer's private bath retains its original freestanding cast-iron tub.

Conversely, layers of later interventions disrupt the purity of the space—tiles laid over the original flooring, false ceilings concealing the height, and wall claddings that stifle the breathability of the "mares" stone walls…

The grand central clastra, around which the building unfolds, becomes a green oasis in the heart of the village—a serene retreat where life can be savored at an unhurried pace.

Most of the existing trees are preserved, while a new water feature is introduced, bringing a sense of freshness during the summer months.
